In the journey of blending faith and enterprise, there are two essential functions for a Great Commission businessman. As a follower of Christ in the marketplace, the call is twofold: fostering human flourishing and proclaiming the gospel.
Creating a Culture of Human Flourishing
A kingdom-minded business doesn’t just aim for profit; it aims to cultivate an environment where people thrive. This involves creating workplaces that reflect the values of the kingdom—values that integrate the head, heart, and hands of the gospel into the very culture of the workplace. It’s about offering people the dignity of work, the opportunity to build wealth, and a sense of purpose. When people engage in meaningful work, they find a deeper sense of purpose and community. Providing these opportunities isn’t just good business; it’s a reflection of God’s intention for humanity to flourish.
Proclaiming the Eternal Hope of the Gospel
Yet, the mission doesn’t end with human flourishing. No matter how much we enhance lives here and now, the ultimate goal is to point people to the eternal hope found in Jesus Christ. A business that embraces kingdom values must also embrace the Great Commission. It’s essential to help people see that the flourishing we experience now is just a shadow of what’s to come, a mere opening act of what the Father has in store. Without the gospel, this temporal flourishing falls short of the eternal life that Jesus offers. One where worship of Jesus and life abundant walk hand in hand in perfection.
A kingdom business, therefore, has a dual purpose: to show a better way of living through the wisdom of Jesus and to proclaim the necessity of faith in Christ as the source and point of that better way.
Jesus prayed, ““This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent — Jesus Christ. I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with that glory I had with you before the world existed.” - John 17:3-5 CSB
Ultimately, the goal is to form kingdom communities—churches—where human flourishing and eternal life converge. If we don’t guide people to the full reality of the kingdom through faith in Christ, we miss the ultimate purpose. Even Jesus understood that work on earth is the starting block for an eternity in glory.
In essence, a kingdom business should reach into eternity, offering a taste of the new heavens and the new earth, where perfect human flourishing is fully realized. It’s a call to show the world a better way and to invite them into the fullness of life in Jesus Christ.
